An unexpected drop in Delaware gas prices continued into Monday. The price at the pump for regular unleaded fell another two cents over the weekend, AAA Mid-Atlantic reported.

The decline came when it appeared that Wawa unexpectedly dropped its price for regular by about 10 cents a gallon. Competitors, such as Royal Farms followed its lead.

Reasons for the price drop remain unclear but may hinge on concerns that drivers will become more active in searching for the best price and might not stop in as often for gas, hoagies, and coffee.

Despite the drop in price, the pain at the pump is much greater than a few weeks ago.

According to AAA, the average cost to fuel a vehicle with a 15-gallon tank is $62.56. Last month the price was  $52.84. Six months ago, the cost was $45.07. A year ago, it was $41.17.

On Monday morning, crude oil was trading on the Nymex exchange at about $1.02 a barrel, down from $109 a barrel at the close. The price of oil has dropped in recent days, after spiking due to the concerns over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and sanctions from Western nations.

The GasBuddy site, reported a Liberty station in Hartly, had the lowest gas price in Delaware at $3.91 a gallon.

A station-convenience store in Bear that rebranded from higher-priced BP to discounter Liberty was charging $4.10 a gallon for regular. GasBuddy rounds down gas prices and does not take into account the nine-tenths of a penny difference.

GasBuddy uses posts from members, rather than the reporting process of AAA. That can sometimes lead to prices being out of data. GasBuddy does list the day and time when it received the report. GasBuddy, AAA and others also offer discounts to members
