Delaware House member Gerald Brady, D-Wilmington,  has been charged with shoplifting at an Acme store in Newark.

Newark Police reported that in the early evening of Jan. 12,  they received a report of shoplifting at 100 Suburban Drive.

The  Acme loss prevention employee reported that an employee saw a man enter the store and recognized the individual from a previous incident that was not reported to police.

The employee saw the man push a shopping cart full of merchandise past the registers and toward the store’s exit. The employee confronted the man for failing to pay for the merchandise. He declined to pay for the merchandise, left the store, and entered a vehicle. A license plate number was recorded during the incident, which involved less than $200 in merchandise.

The employee also reported to Newark Police that on December 29 a similar incident occurred.

The individual involved was identified as Brady, who turned himself in to police. He will appear in court at a later date.

Newark Police noted that reports of an incident had been circulated in the media. However, under department policy, the incident could not be disclosed until an arrest warrant was issued.

Brady recently announced his resignation from the House, citing Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome in his decision. Brady served and was deployed overseas while in the National Guard.

House Speaker Pete Schwartzkopf came to his defense, citing his service and the effects of PTSD that often occurs from those serving in the military.

It came after Brady said he would not seek another term with his Wilmington area district was eliminated under redistricting. At that time, an Email message from Brady contained an anti-Asian reference.

Brady is the Executive Director of the Delaware AFL-CIO.
