Bad weather leads to aircraft switch and slow motorcade to DC on Monday

President Joe Biden flew out Monday morning from New Castle Airport after spending the New Years’ weekend at their home near Greenville after a quick trip to their North Shores home near Rehoboth Beach.

Air Force One was dispatched to the airport after conditions deteriorated to the point that the Marine One helicopter was not deemed to be an option for travel.

According to media reports, the exit door on Air Force was stuck for a half-hour when the President landed at Andrews Air Force Base. The motorcade then made their way to the White House at a slow speed in conditions that included jackknifed trucks and stranded vehicles.

The Bidens arrived last Monday at their North Shore home near Rehoboth after flying in from the White House. The Bidens spent Christmas at the White House.

Flight restrictions were extended until Monday, after initially expiring on Sunday. The Northeast Corridor is seeing snow on Monday, with the possibility of heavier accumulations in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, Biden held a phone call with President Vladimir Putin of Russia to discuss a range of topics, including upcoming diplomatic engagements with Russia.

On Sunday, Biden spoke with the president of Ukraine and expressed support for the sovereignty of the nation as well as diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

Russia has amassed troops on the border with Ukraine, with fears of invasion increasing. Biden has reportedly warned Putin that Russia will pay a high price for any invasion.

On Friday afternoon, the First Couple traveled to Wilmington to have lunch at Bank’s Seafood, a restaurant on the riverfront. The Bidens have dined at the restaurant in the past. Outside of Banks, they commented on the passing of Betty White at age 99.

The First Couple earlier made news in Rehoboth by walking their new puppy, Commander, a German Shepherd and a gift from the President’s brother.

Trips to beach town have been few for the Bidens, who have mainly split their weekends between Camp David and their home near Greenville.

Plans for an August beach vacation were cut short by issues facing the administration.

There had been concerns that summer visits would cause disruptions during the busy summer season and would limit the use of aerial banner planes that fly near crowded beaches.

Rehoboth had a busy summer season with the seaside town becoming nationally known following Biden’s election win.
