Financially troubled Tower Heath is closing Jennersville Hospital in West Grove, PA after a sales agreement with a for-profit company in Texas fell apart.

The closing date for the hospital is Dec. 31.

In November, the Reading, PA hospital system announced the sale of Brandywine and Jennersville hospitals to Canyon Atlantic Partners LLC.

“We are deeply saddened by this turn of events, however, no viable options remain for the continued operation of these facilities. Our responsibility to our patients, as well as employees and the communities served, is to ensure this transition included an effective and safe path for change,” a spokesperson for Tower Health said in a statement Thursday.

Tower stated that it will work with patients “to transition care, and with employees and providers on placement into other positions.”

Tower had purchased the two hospitals that struggled in their rural locations with other hospital systems shying away from acquisitions. Tower itself struggled with a heavy debt load from its acqusitions, with the Covid-19 pandemic worsening its finances.

Jennersville Hospital is about 14 miles northwest of Newark.

ChristianaCare, which has physician practice in the West Grove area, declined to comment on the closing. The area north of Newark has a large number of retirees from DuPont and other area companies.

Penn Medicine, which operates Chester County Hospital in West Chester, PA, has a large clinic near the hospital
