The number of people in Delaware hospitals with Covid-19 complications rose to a record 485 on Friday, according to the Delaware Division of Public Health dashboard.

The Thursday summary from the Delaware Division of Public Health reported nearly 2,000 daily cases, with that number expected to go higher as more test results are tabulated.

Three deaths were reported. All were vaccinated. Overall, about 70% percent of those who died from Covid-19 complications in the past several months were unvaccinated.

On Thursday, Gov. John Carney issued an emergency order that would increase the presence of the National Guard in dealing with a growing number of more severe cases of the virus.

One encouraging development comes from the surge in cases not resulting in the same percentage of serious cases as in the past. Despite daily case numbers being nearly double the figure of the early 2021 peak, the rate of hospitalizations to positive cases has declined, thanks to vaccinations and advances in treatment.

Still, hospitals in the state are full due to Covid cases, other illnesses, accidents, and those who did not seek treatment for medical conditions earlier in the pandemic. There has also been an uptick in critical cases that demand the highest level of care.
