Wawa has joined stores in requiring employees to wear masks and suggesting that customers going into its stores do the same.

WHYY and other media outlets reported the change came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines were revised. As a result, home Depot, Target, and other retailers require employees to wear masks in areas with high transmission rates.

The CDC has long advised unvaccinated individuals to wear masks but suggests that everyone wear face coverings indoors in areas with an elevated number of Covid-19 cases.

The CDC guidance was changed due to the presence of the faster-spreading Delta variant and indications that vaccinated individuals can spread the virus, even though they might not show symptoms or have mild cases.  “Breakthrough’  cases among the unvaccinated remain rare in Delaware and other states.

Delaware and adjacent states have recently moved into the elevated case territory. Delaware is now listed as having a “substantial” spread of the virus.

Delaware Gov. John Carney continues to suggest wearing masks in crowded indoor settings. He has used his trips to get coffee at Wawa in illustrating areas where mask use is advisable.
