The average gas price in Delaware stayed a hair under $3 a gallon after gyrations in the past couple of weeks.

Gas price averages are from AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Figures from AAA’s Fuel Price Finder indicated that  Wawa and Royal Farms stayed with price cuts after an earlier increase of several cents a gallon.

The Fuel Price Finder also indicated that the gap between price leaders and discounters, like Costco and BJ’s, has been reduced. The lowest prices were in Middletown, where Sun Gas was charging $2.84 a gallon.

In its latest weekly report, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported that gas demand dropped to a lower level than the rate during the same period in  2019. That could mean summer gas demand is softening as the school year starts,

Still, elevated crude prices continue to keep summer pump prices high. As crude prices remain high, AA expects the national average to remain above $3 per gallon throughout the summer.

In  NYMEX trading on Monday, crude oil settled was slightly under $70 a barrel up from Friday as the Afghan government fell in a quick collapse.

Crude prices declined slightly this week due to market concerns that crude demand may not rebound this year as anticipated due to surging coronavirus infection rates across the globe. As a result, despite EIA’s latest report showing that total domestic crude stocks decreased a bit last week, price decreases have occurred.

“If drivers saw any movement at the pump this week, it may have been a slight decrease as the gasoline demand has started to wane,” said Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Crude oil prices are still hovering around the $70 mark, which may keep pump prices from dropping much further.”
