Weather Service investigating tornado reports in Milford area

The National Weather Service is investigating reports of a tornado or tornadoes that caused widespread damage in the Milford area Thursday.

High winds knocked down trees and video was posted of what appeared to be a funnel cloud in our near Milford, a city that straddles Kent and Sussex counties.

WRDE-TV reported heavy damage to a farm near Milford. Winds destroyed a barn on the property and downed trees  

Delaware Electric Cooperative crews worked through the night to restore power. About 4,500 members lost power Thursday night. Power was largely restored by Friday morning, according to the cooperative’s outage map.

A Tornado Warning and a Severe Thunderstorm Warning were issued late Thursday afternoon for Kent and Sussex counties.

Last year,  an August tornado caused damage along a 29-mile path south to north,  downing trees and damaging roofs in an area extending from Kent County to  Middletown.
