Delaware Park quietly opened 1937 Brewing at the end of June.

The brewery is named in honor of the opening year for Delaware Park, a venture of a member of the duPont family.

The idea for the brewery came after successful beer-focused events at the track and casino south of Newark.

The 1937 space features its own brews as well as a “gastropub”  menu.  Nine different brews are offered.  Hours are noon to 9 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday with the kitchen closing at 8 p.m.  Previous posts from 1937 showed noon to 10 p.m. daily hours.

The brewery should help draw a younger crowd to Delaware Park. The gaming industry has sprung back from Covid-19, aided by sports betting that tends to attract younger people

Construction began last year on the brewery, which comes with a $1.7 million price tag, according to DelawareOnline (paywall).

Delaware Park has many amenities that include restaurants and golf courses, and horse racing,  but no hotel or separate casino complex. It has remained a “locals” casino with a long racing season.

Delaware Park is owned by the Rickman family, which also has a construction business and for a time owned a horse track and casino near Ocean City, MD. The family has largely preserved the expansive property.

The Newark area now has a. half-dozen breweries within a short drive of one another. A tour is an option on the weekends as long as there is a designated driver.

For now, you can follow the brewery and get a glimpse of its offerings through this millennial-friendly  Instagram link.- Doug Rainey
