The Middletown Town Council approved a preliminary plan for a vaccine manufacturing campus following a public hearing earlier in the week.

Final action will be taken at a meeting in early July.

The preliminary major land development plan is for a 187-acre site at 1091 Industrial Drive, formerly listed as 950 Levels Road.

The  site would also require permits from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Enivonmenental Control (DNREC).

The company’s identity has not been revealed.

A representative of a commercial real estate company based outside Delaware earlier appeared before Middletown’s planning and zoning panel to discuss details of the project that has the potential to employ 1,200.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing has been moving offshore over the decades and a company that brought jobs back to the U.S. would score some points with the Biden-Harris Administration and others

The real estate firm representative  did not respond to a request for comment and neither did town officials.

Delaware has seen a spurt of development activity, with Middletown having an inventory of land zoned for manufacturing and distribution.

Access for truck traffic has been aided by the new Route 301 toll road that connects with Route 1 and Interstate  95. Route 301 through fast-growing  Middletown had long been a bottleneck.

The population of the town has swelled to nearly  24,000, according to the 2020 census, up from about 6,200 in 2000.

The land in question is unlikely to generate much public opposition, since it is away from residential areas.

In keeping with the end of Covid-19 meeting restrictions, the council meeting will be in-person only, with no remote access. There are no plans for a hybrid format.
