Delaware continues to see a surge in coronavirus cases.

The Sunday  report from the Delaware Division of Public Health showed more than 300 new coronavirus cases during and after family get-togethers around the spring holidays. The state is also seeing increased travel and new variants of the virus.

The numbers

  • One new death reported today – and individual from New Castle County in their 80s. The death increased Delaware’s total number of COVID-related deaths to 1,578.
  • 365 new positive cases, bringing the overall total to 98,570. The latest total means about 10 percent of the state’s population has tested positive for the virus since March of last year.
  • 23.8 percent  of people tested positive in the seven-day rolling average up one half of one percent percent from the previous day)
  • 5.5 precent of total tests were positive in the seven-day rolling average, up one-tenth of a percent from the previous day.
  • 129* current hospitalizations (total is not complete because of provider reporting delays), including 21 individuals in critical condition.
  • 36 new hospital admissions (up 12 from the previous day).
  • 562,730 total vaccine doses administered (up 6,202 from the previous day).

Below is an interactive map, accessible via laptop computer,  from Google and media partners that shows Delaware well above the national average in the number of new cases per 100,000.

New Castle County is now in the dark red zone of 500 or more cases per 100,000 population. Sussex County, which struggled with Covid-19 a year ago, now has about half the rate of cases as New Castle.
