Gov. John Carney said Delaware is ahead of the curve in vaccinations, with 38 percent of the state’s population has received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Carney cited the 38 percent figure at a weekly Covid-19 briefing.

Carney also reported that 83 percent of the state’s senior citizens had received at least one vaccine dose, with 66 percent fully vaccinated.

The figures show that the state, medical providers, and pharmacies are still getting second doses to those in the early vaccination phases.

The governor said the state made headway over the weekend with nearly 15,000 vaccinations.

Carney and Delaware Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay cautioned that mask wearing should continue regardless of whether an individual is fully vaccinated.

The state has seen a handful of known as “breakthrough cases” that involve vaccinated individuals who contracted the virus. One of those individuals with pre-existing conditions died.

To date, the number of such cases mirrors the  90-95 percent effectiveness figures for Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines.

Delaware continues to see what Carney described as a “mini-surge” in cases and hospitalizations. According to the governor and Rattay, the good news is a flattening of the number of cases. Still, the positive test rate remains slightly above the World Health Organization’s five percent moderate spread benchmark.

According to the Covid-19 Case Mapper below from Google and media partners, Delaware ranks higher than the national average in the percentage of residents getting at least one shot but slightly below the national average in the percentage getting both doses.

The news is not as good when it comes to new cases, with New Castle County reporting more than 500 cases per 100,000 population, putting it in the highest (dark red)  tier on the map. Kent has a slightly lower number of cases, with Sussex having the smallest number per 100,000 population.

Delaware does not list vaccinations on a county by county basis. Unlike its more heavily populated neighbors, the First State does not have county health departments.
