Gov. John Carney confirmed that the state would ease  Covid-19 restrictions on businesses but stopped short of making any formal announcements.

Carney made the prediction on Tuesday  at the weekly Covid-19 press briefing.

Public Health officials and the governor have been meeting with industry groups, including the Delaware Restaurant Association, to get their views on how the state can proceed.

The state continues to maintain a 50 percent occupancy limit at dining,  tavern, and retail locations.

Neighboring Maryland moved to 100 percent occupancy at restaurants and retailers but maintained social distancing standards that reduce dining capacity well below that figure.

Pennsylvania also eased restrictions, although Philadephia will remain  more restrictive.

The state has seen a decline in daily cases and hospitalizations. While some flattening in numbers has taken place in the past two weeks, the number of new cases has remained at or below 200, with hospital staying around 200.

Cases have also declined sharply in zip codes tied to the University of Delaware community.

State Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay praised UD for its response to an outbreak of 600 cases in recent weeks. Steps included more testing and closing dining halls to all but takeout service.  Last week, cases tied to the UD community dropped to three dozen.
