Delaware ranks among the more restrictive states when it comes to coronavirus-related orders and regulations.

The WalletHub financial information website ranks Delaware 37th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in Covid-19 restrictions.

Rankings in the neighboring states of Pennsylvania (32) and Maryland (27) indicate the two states had fewer restrictions than Delaware. Even New Jersey, which had one of the two highest Covid-19 death rates, was 36th.

Delaware Gov. John Carney left more restrictions for public gatherings,  banquets, and weddings than many other governors in the latest modification to the emergency order.

The state rankings did take into account local restrictions in larger cities. For example, Philadelphia and Baltimore have more restrictions than other areas of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Both cities are easing restrictions on dining.

The ranking report comes as the governors of Texas and Mississippi lifted mandatory masks and other restrictions.

Governors have claimed that fewer restrictions have led to stronger economies than in states with more restrictions.

Another WalletHub report on states recovering from the pandemic showed Delaware, a state that kept restrictions,  ranking 18th in decline in unemployment claims. By contrast, Florida, a state with fewer restrictions, ranked 50th. Both Texas and Mississippi, which lifted all restrictions this week,  ranked behind Delaware when it came to a decline in jobless claims.

Meanwhile, Iowa, which had among the fewest restrictions, ranked second in decline in jobless claims since the pandemic’s onset nearly a year ago.
