Apartment complex fire in Claymont leaves more than 40 displaced

The Delaware State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating a Sunday morning fire that heavily damaged a Claymont,apartment building and displaced more than 40 people.

The two-alarm blaze occurred around 4 a.m. at the Valley Run Apartments.The Claymont Fire Company arrived on the scene with flames shooting from the occupied apartment building. Several neighboring fire companies and the New Castle County paramedics also responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Deputy fire marshals are currently investigating the fire’s cause. All 12 units were badly damaged and are not inhabitable. Adjoining buildings are being evaluated. More than 40 residents have been displaced. The American Red Cross has been requested to provide emergency assistance to those in need.

Fire damage could exceed $1 million. The estimated damage assessment has not been completed at this time. The fire remains under investigation.
