Gore wire & cable products play role in successful landing of Mars rover

W. L. Gore & Associates joined scientists and space exploration enthusiasts in celebrating last week’s successful landing of the Mars 2020 Mission’s Perseverance Rover.

It followed a successful launch on July 30 from Cape Canaveral in Florida. This U.S. mission addresses questions of potential life on Mars and was directly enabled by Gore technology.

blankGore’s wire and cable products were components for data processing and communications between the Perseverance Rover and the tricky descent stage of the mission.
The intense entry, descent and landing phase began when the spacecraft reached the top of the Martian atmosphere, traveling at about 12,100 miles an hour.
The Newark-based company got it start as a cable producer and is a long-time participant in the space programs.

Gore cabling was also used on the actual rover, which is about the size of a car, but at 2,260 pounds weighs significantly less. The mission is expected to last at least one Mars year, roughly 687 Earth days.

GORE Space Cables have been used in many missions over the decades — including the Apollo 11 mission to the moon as well as the International Space Station, Envisat, Space Shuttle Program, Sentinel, Hubble Space Telescope and others.
