Delaware’s total number of Covid-related deaths  rose  by 7 from a day earlier  to 1,072 as hospitalizations continued to decline, according to Tuesday  night figures from the Delaware Division of Public Health.

The latest figures indicate that the state weathered the post-holiday surge in cases, although it has seen an uptick in deaths. The big concern are strains of the virus that spread more rapidly than the original virus. While Delaware is testing for the new strains, none have been detected or announced.

The other numbers:
  • A total of 355 current hospitalizations down from 383 the previous day.
  • The number of people in critical condition was 48, up one from the previous day.
  •  349 new positive cases, down sharply from the average of 600 or more cases. Daily cases vary, due to the amount of testing and when lab results are processed. The number of cases remains well above the 100 level recorded last summer.
