The  Delaware Division of Public Health reported 10 new deaths linked to coronavirus. Information is current as of the evening of Jan. 4.

The deaths may reflect a delay in receiving data during the holidays. The state went a few days without reporting new deaths.

A total of  771 new positive cases were reported, bringing the overall total to move past the 61,000 mark or about six percent of the state’s population. New cases continue to average 700 or more a day, well above the 100 or so reported last summer.

Current hospitalizations were 432.

Delaware’s total number of  Covid-19 related deaths at 947.

Delaware is stepping up testing this week in response to post-holiday demand. Public health officials are hoping they do not see a big surge in cases brought on by holiday get-togethers.

Delaware, like most states, has seen an uptick in cases and hospitalizations that accelerated in the past couple of months. So far, the state has adequate hospital capacity, due in part to a downturn in serious flu cases.
