A-Del Construction Co. was the low bidder on an $11.75  million project designed to smooth traffic flow at the interchange of Interstate 95 and State Route 273 south of Newark.

The bid came in at 82 percent of the state’s estimate.

Southbound traffic from I-95 to Route 273 now merges into  Route 273 creating weaving conditions that contribute to accidents and congestion.

The project includes ramps to westbound 273 from southbound and northbound I-95, a new traffic signal at the new ramp from southbound I-95, and the creation of  Stop Control movement from northbound I-95.

Under Stop Control, drivers are required to come to a full stop and proceed only when no vehicles are approaching from any of the uncontrolled approaches.

Ramps  along the interchange are getting upgraded guardrail with paving also taking place.

Westbound  273 is currently two lanes going over I-95 with a short auxiliary lane between the on-ramp from northbound  I-95 to the off-ramp to southbound I-95.

This project will now carry three lanes across I-95 to help alleviate traffic congestion.

Also getting underway this year is a lengthy project that will reconstruct  I-95 through Wilmington.

Route 273 is less busy than the key interchange of I-95 and Route 1 the main route to Dover and beach areas. However, during  peak periods, like the evening rush hour, some drivers may opt for Route 273.
