Three dozen people attending a party were ticketed for violating Newark and state public gathering limits

Police were called to an apartment in the unit block of Center Street Tuesday night for a report of loud music.  Officers could hear loud music from an apartment, a violation of the City of Newark noise ordinance.

Officers charged three residents of the apartment with allowing loud music to be played. In addition, 36 people in the apartment were charged with violating a city ordinance related to gatherings during the pandemic. All persons were issued summonses and released at the scene.

The current State of Emergency Order by Governor Carney, and recent ordinances passed by Newark City Council in response to Covid-19 limits indoor private gatherings to 10 and outdoor get-togethers to 20.

Covid-19 contact tracing efforts have identified smaller gatherings as a leading source of “community spread”  of the virus.
