Initial Delaware unemployment claims in late November fell to 1,440, down 429 a week earlier,  the U.S. Labor Department of Labor reported.

In the week ending November 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims for the nation was 712,000, decreasing 75,000 from the previous week’s revised level.

The advance national number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending November 21 was 5,520,000, a decrease of 569,000 from the previous week’s revised level.

The better-than-expected jobless figures, along with brighter prospects for a  stimulus package, led to gains on Wall Street.

According to a recent Reuters story, the unemployment claims estimates have under fire from the Government Accountability Office.

The watchdog group says the figures don’t consider a backlog of jobless claims that have not been processed.

Delawareans have complained about delays in processing claims and an inability to speak to a live person.

On a related note, CNBC reported that estimated job gains for November could represent a high point. Covid-19-related job losses could accelerate as states work to deal with the growing number of cases and hospitalizations.
