Hunter Biden, son of President-Elect Joe Biden, confirmed he is under investigation for tax matters.

Biden issued the following statement through the Biden-Harris transition website:

“I learned yesterday for the first time that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs. I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisors.”

The Biden-Harris transition had the following response: “President-Elect Biden is deeply proud of his son, who has fought through difficult challenges, including the vicious personal attacks of recent months, only to emerge stronger.”

Hunter Biden has been at the center of allegations over his work in Ukraine as a member of the board of a gas company in that nation. He has also admitted to struggling with drug use.

Allegations over the role of President Donald Trump in attempts to dig up damaging information on Hunter and his father led to Trump’s impeachment by the U.S. House.  The Senate later acquitted Trump.

In October, the New York Post reported a computer repairman and Trump supporter in Wilmington found a hard drive on a computer left at his business tied to Hunter Biden that allegedly contained information linking the Bidens to a meeting with a Ukrainian businessman.

Tied to the story was Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Guliani who dropped off what was said to be a hard drive at New Castle County Police headquarters. The item was turned over to the FBI.

Guiliani has traveled to Ukraine in an apparent fact-finding effort related to the Bidens.

The Post story was widely discredited as Biden emerged as the victor of Trump.

Owner  John Paul Mac Isaac closed the computer business, known as The Mac Shop,  in Wilmington’s Trolley Square neighborhood.

Guiliani went on to lead efforts by Trump to contest the election.
