A record number of people tested positive for coronavirus soared to a record level in the Thursday report from the Delaware Division of Public Health.

No new deaths were reported, with that figure remaining at 779.

As of Wednesday night, 754 new cases were reported, shattering the previous high of 682 cases on Nov. 30 and bringing the overall total to 37,456.

The cumulative breakdown by county: New Castle, 21,211 cases; Kent, 5,405 cases; Sussex, 10,746; county not determined, 94.

Of people tested, 19.2 percent were positive under a seven-day rolling average, up by 1 percentage point from the previous day.

Eight percent of total tests were positive in the seven-day rolling average, up five-tenths of a percent from the previous day. The total test measurement takes into account those who have been tested more than once.

Covid-19 testing has increased sharply. However, the rates of positive cases have increased at an even greater pace.

Hospitalizations totaled 277, up to four from the previous day, including 33 in critical condition. The record number of hospitalizations earlier in the pandemic was 337, with the figure dropping below 50 in the summer.

Delaware has 400 to 500 beds that can be used in the treatment of Covid-19 patients. However, a surge in hospitalizations can lead to staffing issues, state officials reported.
