The number of hospitalizations in Delaware for Covid-19 hit a record level for the second straight day.

The information from  the Delaware Division of Public Health was gathered on Tuesday night.

The number of 925 daily cases also broke a daily record and is  nine times the number reported during the flattening period of the pandemic last summer.

No new deaths were reported, after a gain of 10 the previous day. The total number of Covid-19 related deaths now totals 803.

Hospitalizations stand at  348, above the spring record of 337. The state saw more than 40 daily hospital admissions in recent days. The number of people in critical condition remained above 40.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, Gov. John Carney said  Kent County had seen the biggest increase in hospitalizations. He noted that Covid-19 testing is lower in Kent than in the state’s other two counties.

State Division of Public of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay reported that six of the 10 deaths reported on Monday were in Kent, the state’s least populated county.

Sussex is no longer the county with the highest incidence of positive cases as Kent, and to some extent, New Castle County sees a surge in cases and hospitalizations. No area of the state is considered to be in good shape when it comes to the surge in cases.

Delaware has between 400 to 500 hospital beds, with hospitals having the flexibility to add space.

The biggest issue, according to Carney, is staffing not the number of available beds. The virus has taken a heavy toll on frontline health care workers.

“It’s not a hoax, Carney said of the case surge, pointing to the rising number of hospitalizations and increase in deaths.
