Delaware continues to see an elevated rate of coronavirus cases as hospitalizations moved into territory not seen since the pandemic’s early stages.

Monday night results from the Delaware Division of Public Health showed hospitalizations rising to 246 from 243 a day earlier. The number of hospitalizations peaked in the spring in the 330-range and dropped into the 50s, before a steady rise in the fall.

Delaware has between 400 and 500 hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients.

At the weekly coronavirus briefing, Gov. John Carney said hospitals expressed confidence in handling current cases, due to improvements in treatment that are reducing the average number of days in the hospital. The severity of many cases is less than during the spring peak.

The number of daily positive cases rose to 632 from 489  a day earlier.

That boosted the seven-day rolling average percentage of people testing positive to 16.4, up from 15.1 percent. Regarding the percentage of positive test to total tests, the Monday night figure was 6.8, compared to 6.3 a day earlier, based on the seven-day average.

Preliminary figures on the total number of deaths were 777 on Monday night, up from 772 a day earlier.

Hospitalizations are now four times the figure of the low point reported in the summer.  An uptick in cases has continued since the Labor Day weekend and has accelerated during November. For more data, including breakdowns by age, sex, race/ethnicity, at the statewide, county, and, in some cases, ZIP code or census tract level: https://myhealthycommunity.dhss.delaware.gov/locations/state
