A day and a year for the airing of grievances

Happy Festivus,

Today Delaware sort of celebrates a holiday that came in response to the commercialization of Christmas and that tiresome tune from the Lexus holiday commercial  (I made up the latter).

Festivus features the airing of grievances, feats of strength, and “miracles” that were actually everyday sorts of things.

Festivus rose to fame on the sitcom Seinfeld when the son of its founder of the holiday. wrote a legendary episode.

But long after Seinfeld ended its remarkable run, Festivus lives on in popular culture, especially the airing of grievances part.

A symbol of the day is the  Festivus pole, a minimalist take on those bygone aluminum Christmas trees and yet another appropriate symbol for 2020.

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)  uses the day to list examples of government waste. The list is similar to what some of us might remember as the Golden Fleece Awards that came from the late Sen. William Proxmire from Wisconsin, a fiscal hawk and a Democrat.

We have seen been plenty of room for the airing of grievances during this crazy year. Just check out social media.

Many online commentators celebrate the grievances side of  Festivus every day of the year.

One travel blogger decided to cancel his annual Festivus post that pointed to  various grievances. Cited was the treatment received when suggesting earlier this year that it might be a good idea to take fewer plane flights.

Here’s to more travel and fewer grievances to air in 2021.  This newsletter will make its final appearance for 2020 tomorrow. – Doug Rainey, chief content officer.
