A.J. Schall, director of the Delaware Emergency Management Agency and a key player in the state’s coronavirus testing program,  has tested positive for Covid-19.

According to Gov. John Carney, Schall tested positive for the virus on Frida and is at home with mild, cold-like symptoms.

“I spent time around A.J. this past Tuesday, but I have not been identified as a close contact by the Division of Public Health, based on mask-wearing and social distancing precautions. Out of an abundance of caution, I am canceling public events this week and will exercise caution in any interactions with others, as always. We will hold our regular Covid-19 press briefing virtually this coming Tuesday,” Carney stated.

Carney continued, “This only underscores the seriousness of this virus. It’s a real threat – especially for our most vulnerable friends, neighbors, and loved ones. Let’s all do our part to limit the spread this winter. Wear a mask. Think twice before gathering with friends or family outside your household. We’ll get through this,”

Like most states, Delaware has seen a surge in coronavirus cases, with Schall overseeing a ramping up of tests to 80,000 to 100,000 a month.

Schall, along with Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay has been at most of Carney’s Covid-19 briefings that got underway this spring.

Schall became DEMA Director after serving as chief of the Aetna Hose Hook and Ladder Co., Newark and Glasgow.  He also worked at Bank of America.
