Coons and Carney sail to easy victories
In the closely watched Republican primary race for governor, Julianne Murray won out in the battle for the lead in a six-candidate field. Murray had been endorsed by the state Republican Party.
The other four candidates other than former gubernatorial candidate Colin Bonini fell to the back of the pack. The large field was influenced by unhappiness with the state of emergency orders by incumbent Gov. John Carney who gained nearly 85 percent of the vote over Democratic challenger David Lamar Williams, Jr.
Democrat Chris Coons U.S. Senator trounced progressive candidate Jessica Scarane. Some speculated that the race was a warm-up for a future race if U.S. Sen. Tom Carper decides not to seek another term..
Coons issued the following after his victory: “Serving the people of Delaware in the United States Senate is the honor of a lifetime, and I’m humbled by the support our campaign received from Delaware Democrats up and down our state in this primary election. I’m grateful for all the volunteers who worked so hard to make today’s victory possible, for the dedication of my campaign team, and the support of my family.”
Coons continued, “My primary opponent, Jessica Scarane, ran a campaign focused on critical issues such as strengthening healthcare, raising wages, and combating climate change. While we have different approaches, we share the same goals of building a more just, sustainable, and inclusive Delaware.”
In the Republican race for the Senate seat, insurgent candidate Lauren Witzke won out over Jim DeMartino. Witzke waged a campaign that featured impromptu rallies.
Mike Purzycki won a three-candidate race for Wilmington Mayor as did Matt Meyer in the race for New Castle County Executive.
Purzycki faced a tough battle with former city treasurer Velda Jones-Potter. The two had clashed over Potter’s actions in the treasurer’s post.
Meyer’s challenger Maggie Jones, a retired state employee, lined up union support and a big contribution from a New Jersey-based union-linked political action committee. Meyer had drawn fire from the county’s police union over contract negotiations.
Four years ago, Meyer scored a surprise win over long-time County Executive Tom Gordon, a former County Police Chief who had served three terms in the post.
In the Republican race for the state’s lone congressional seat, actor and former train conductor Lee Murphy was headed to the nomination by a decisive margin over Matthew Morris.
It appeared that the bulk of the voting in Delaware took place via mail based on the lack of lines at polling places and early results posted by the Delaware Department of Elections. Voting was heavy by primary election standards, with about one-third of the state’s registered voters casting their ballots.
Also, a few long-time incumbents in the General Assembly were defeated at the hands of younger challengers.
Below are updated election results provided by the state Department of Elections. With the majority of precincts reporting, total turnout was about 31 percent.
Below are the final unofficial results
