The University of Delaware reported 29 new coronavirus cases in a  Friday update to its dashboard.

The Friday report pushed the number of Covid-19 cases to slightly more than 300 since the start of the fall session.

The university is believed to test 1,000 or more students a week. Tests are also available in other locations. The university earlier announced stiffer penalties for students cited by police for attendance at parties that exceed legal maximums in the City of Newark.

State public health officials have not detected any major outbreaks tied to parties, but instead suspect that smaller get-togethers are leading to the spread of the virus.

UD earlier required students to undergo Covid-19 testing before heading to campus.

Delaware’s rate of positive cases now averages 6.7 percent on a seven-day rolling average up from the four and a half percent range a few weeks ago.

On Thursday, UD President Dennis Assanis reported that the university faces a $250 million budget deficit, due to lower enrollment and other factors related to Covid-19.

The university’s highly regarded student-operated restaurant Vita Nova announced it would end carryout service out of an abundance of caution.

The shortfall will result in job and other expense cuts.

UD is operating in a hybrid format, although the bulk of classes are online.
