Hello everyone,

The spotlight is on Wilmington for the next couple of days as the focus shifts from the Hotel DuPont to the Chase Center on the Riverfront.

Zoom backdrops of Wilmington were numerous over the weekend as reporters and pundits looked for scraps of news after presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden named U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris as his vice-presidential running-mate.

Last week, Biden emerged from his homes near Greenville and Rehoboth to introduce  Harris at A.I. DuPont High School near Wilmington.

The focus later shifted to the Hotel DuPont as a virtual fund-raising effort was held.

Signs of an. historic period for the state and nation were few.

Local police and Secret Service became skilled at having Vice President Biden, whisked in and out of his home with occasional outings at Janssens Market and spots in and around Wilmington.

On Saturday, we did see a lot of police activity on Route 141 at Commons Boulevard. What at first seemed like a major traffic accident, later appeared to someone leaving or arriving from the nearby Wilmington-New Castle airport.

On Monday morning, the Chase Center on the Riverfront was adorned with American flags and a convention banner. A week earlier, it was unclear as to where the acceptance speeches would take place.

Milwaukee, the site of the convention and the scene of some socially distanced activity, was ruled out earlier by the Biden camp.

Some speculated it might be in the  Wilkes-Barre- Scranton area, which  Biden claims as his hometown. Of late, he has been mentioning Claymont more frequently.

That area of Pennsylvania may actually be better known as the setting for the hit TV show, The Office.

Pennsylvania remains a key state for Biden on the road to the White House.

In the end, Wilmington won out and for a brief, shining moment, will get a little time in the spotlight.

Enjoy this beautiful day that will be perfect for some walks and outdoor dining. – Doug and Sharon Rainey.
