Dining notes: Some wiggle room on restaurant seating: UD Courtyard Bistro open; Xamana closes;

Restaurants are getting a little more wiggle room in seating more diners. The current requirement of a  60 percent occupancy rate limit when combined with social distancing often leads to 50 percent or less occupancy rate.

At the same time, restaurants in confined spaces often need a 100 percent occupancy figure for Friday and Saturday nights to stay in business. Another question is whether diners are comfortable with 100 percent occupancy.

Under the modifications, tables and booths must be arranged in a way that ensures customers at one table are at least six feet apart from customers who are adjacent to or facing them unless barriers are present.

That can include booths with barriers that are at least six feet in height and no more than two feet from the floor.

Barriers or dividers do not have to be plastic, plexiglass, or walls only – other ideas include tall flowers and greenery/planter boxes, fabric screens or draping, free-standing room dividers, etc.

Xamana says adios

Bear’s Xamana  Kitchen Lounge closed its doors late last month.

“it’s unknown as to whether or not they will reopen due to the uncertain times we are living in.  We are at a loss of words by which to express our gratitude to our loyal patrons and friends. We loved serving you and being a part of your cravings,” the restaurant posted on social media.

Xamana had opened last year in space formerly occupied by Marco’s, an Italian restaurant.

Xamana offered a more upscale take on Mexican food, but the Sunset Plaza location off Route 40 did not lend itself to outdoor dining. Also in the vicinity is the long-running Riviera Taco food trailer.
