The University of Delaware’s fall sports season has been canceled, due to concerns over the Covid-19 pandemic.
It comes after the CAA Football Conference announced its decision to suspend competition for the upcoming fall football season.
A similar announcement was made regarding the MEAC Conference. Conference member Delaware State University plans to continue athletic training.
“In addition, as an athletic department, we have also made the difficult decision to suspend all fall sports at UD, which includes cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. We believe that the complexity of managing a complete competitive season (practice, home and away competitions, travel, etc.) would create significant risk to the health and safety of our people and our campus,” UD Athletic Director Chrissi Rawak wrote in a letter to the university community.
Also scrubbed were rowing, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf.
UD football and basketball are revenue producers that support other sports at the university, even in down years. The university recently invested in an major upgrade of the football stadium as well as athletic training facilities.
