Death toll from coronavirus rises by one to 515

The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) reported the number of deaths from coronavirus rose by one from Tuesday to 515.

Despite an outbreak in Sussex County, Delaware ‘s percentage of confirmed cases to total tests has stayed around the five percent mark of ate,  a manageable figure according to officials.

The state reported 12,462 people have tested positive for the virus. The cumulative  percentage of people testing positive to the  total tested is nearing the 10 percent mark.  The state has sharply increased testing and hopes to see that percentage drop further.

The number of hospitalizations remained stable at 57.

While the total cumulative number of positive cases has increased by 48 between yesterday and today, 22 new positive cases were reported to DPH on July 7. The remaining 26 positive cases are from test results reported on prior days, but processed into the DPH surveillance system on July 7.

A total of 515 Delawareans have passed away due to complications from COVID-19. Individuals who have died from COVID-19 ranged in age from 21 to 104 years old. Of those who have died, 272 were females and 243 were males. A total of 248 individuals were from New Castle County, 92 were from Kent County, and 175 were from Sussex County. The most recent death announced today involved a 64-year-old male resident of New Castle County who had underlying health conditions.

On Tuesday, Delaware was added to the list of travel quarantine states  by New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut  

Gov. John Carney said Delaware was added, due to one metric that is used by the three states. He added that the First State in no way has the issues facing states like Florida, Texas, and Arizona.

Additional demographic data on COVID-19 cases and deaths, including race/ethnicity, more age-specific data and rates information by ZIP code, can be found on the Division of Public Health’s My Healthy Community data portal.

The division is sending daily reports on coronavirus cases, effective at the end of the week  and will issue a weekly summary. Dashboards and the My Healthy Community data portal are updated daily. 

The lack of daily updates will put more of a focus on seven-day trends that smooth out the ups and downs of daily test results.

Delaware Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay said additional data will be added to the My Healthy Community portal including contact tracing information.
