More than half a billion dollars in jobless claims paid in Delaware

Unemployment benefits paid in Delaware moved past the half a billion-dollar mark, according to a weekly report from the Delaware Department of Labor.

Total unemployment benefits paid from mid-March to June 27 totaled nearly $494 million, with the state’s unemployment insurance fund pays about one-third of that amount and the federal government kicking in the remainder. 

Delaware continued to see a decline in initial unemployment claim filings, accrording to a report from the U.S. Department of Labor, The nearly 2,661 jobless claims filed in the most recent week was down 136 from the previous week.

The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program has paid out $37.5 million in benefits. Claims filed total nearly 9,000, with nearly 5,000 claims paid. The program went into effect in mid-May.

The system is for self-employed people who do not pay into the unemployment system and required a separate processing system.

The Delaware Department of Labor and its counterparts in other states have been dealing with a surge of unemployment claims.
