The field is set for Republican and Democratic candidates for federal state and county offices. The primary is scheduled for Sept. 15, with the state Republican Party endorsing their slate of candidates.

The endorsements come as a half-dozen Republicans vie for the post of governor. The GOP convention endorsed  Seaford lawyer Julianne Murphy.

Also endorsed  by Republicans were:

  • Dr. Julia Pillsbury for Insurance Commissioner
  • Lee Murphy for US Congress
  • Julianne Murray for Governor
  • James DeMartino for US Senate
  • Donyale Hall for Lt. Governor (not pictured)

The Democratic race for New Castle County Executive is shaping up to a battle involving organized labor. Maggie Jones is squaring off against Matt Meyer, who is seeking a second term. Jones has the backing of unions and some legislators. Meyer has seen difficult negotiations with employee unions.

Last-minute filings from the Delaware Department of Elections indicate  Wilmington City Treasurer Velda Jone-Potter will take on incumbent Michael Purzycki. Jones-Potter, in turn, dropped out of the race for Treasurer.

Purzycki and Jones-Potter have been at odds over operations of the Treasurer’s office. Justen Wright also filed in the mayor’s race. Winning the Democratic nomination for the post generally assures a win in the general election in Wilmington.

In the Republican field in the governor’s race, former microbrewery executive Neil Shea formally dropped out of the race. The loss of Shea reduced the field to six.

Entering the race was perennial candidate Scott Walker. Walker had signs up long before the primary with just his name in an apparent plan to keep his options open in running for office.

Walker has some name recognition since he managed to win the Republican bid for the state’s lone congressional seat and shares the same name as a former governor of Wisconsin. He was equally well known for sometimes nailing is signs to roadside trees.

Republicans have primaries in the race for Congress and the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, incumbent U.S. Sen. Chris Coons faces a primary challenge from progressive Democrat Jessica Scarane.
