Town of Bethany Beach commissioners voted to require the use of masks in the downtown area, boardwalk and boardwalk plaza.

Media reports indicated the approval came during a special council meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

Fines could range from $50 to $100 under the ordinance.

The ordinance goes a step beyond the state’s mandate for facemasks in indoor public spaces and areas where social distancing is not possible.

Rehoboth Beach requires the use of facemasks in all public areas, including the beach. An exception is made for activities in the ocean.

Parking will also be limited in the town.

Gov. John Carney earlier ordered the Friday closing of bar areas at taverns and restaurants in much of eastern Sussex County.

Drinks can be ordered from tables, but no standing or congregating is permitted. The changes come as an outbreak of Covid-19 cases has been reported in beach areas.

Mass testing is taking place in an effort to determine the extent of the outbreak.

The Delaware Restaurant Association announced on Wednesday that more than 3,000 hospitality workers have been tested for Covid-19 in recent days.
