Trader Joe’s site is now a  ghost town

A now-closed Saks off 5th could become a Trader Joe's

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, we made a quick run to the Christiana Mall area to check out the likely site of the Trader Joe’s store.

A building permit issued this month indicates the store will open at the Christiana Fashion Center and would give the sprawling shopping mecca its first grocery store.

Observing proper social distancing wasn’t a problem. The Fashion Center is basically shut down, with the exception of a few carryout locations and a  Best Buy store that is limited to pickups.

A quick drive on the ring road around the mall had a ghost town feel. It first appeared that the Cabela’s outdoor superstore was open. The store is closed, but the company is reportedly keeping at least some staff.  Target remained moderately busy.

But back to Trader Joe’s. It will be a  while before construction begins. The  Saks Off 5th apparel store exited in a hurry and did not bother to take down any of its inside or outside signs.

For now, Trader Joe’s is mum on any timetable.

The news was greeted on social media with widespread praise, the exception being a few folks who say the mall-Fashion Center area is too crowded – not a problem right now.

Meanwhile,  Gov. John Carney and fellow governors made it clear they have no plans to  “flip a switch” right away when it comes to reopening businesses.

We are seeing some demands for quick openings with a May 1 date mentioned by President Trump for some areas.

A growing number of business owners are wary of such a move, citing supply chain problems and a surge of cooped up people that could bring a second wave of infections.

Stay safe and well.  Our newsletter returns tomorrow.– Doug and Sharon Rainey.
