Trader Joe’s is planning a second store near Christiana Mall.
Delaware Online cited a building permit indicating that the store will be built in the Christiana Fashion Center. It would be the first grocery store in the lifestyle center.
Listed as the site of the store would be the former location of the Saks Off 5th store that closed last year. It is the only significant vacancy in the center which has lured some apparel stores away from the mall itself.
No activity was apparent at the building, which still has Saks signage.
Trader Joe’s has been on the list of the most sought after stores in Delaware, thanks to a combination of low prices and groceries that appeal to many upscale shoppers.
Residents of Newark have indicated a desire to see a Trader Joe’s and a Target store.
The chain is owned by a German family and has operated a store for many years near the Brandywine Town Center off Concord Pike.
The permit did not indicate whether the store would have a separate walled off beer and wine department that is required under Delaware law. The chain is well known for its inexpensive Charles Shaw “Two Buck Chuck” wine offerings.
No completion date was listed for the fit-out of the store.
An email request for comment on plans for the store was sent to Trader Joe’s.
