One of Wilmington’s signature events has been canceled for the first time in its half-century history, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

St. Anthony’s Italian Festival made the announcement on social media.

The event had been scheduled for Jun 7 to June 14. Proceeds benefit St. Anthony of Padua, a landmark parish and school in Wilmington’s Little Italy neighborhood.

The festival includes a carnival and a wide range of Italian fare. Each year, the festival focuses on an area of Italy.

Organizers held open the possibility that a smaller-scale event could be held in late  September, but emphasized that the idea is in its preliminary stages.

The festival has gained national attention and has been listed in the past as one of the nation’s top events.
