Joe’s big night

Good afternoon,

There is only one story today in Delaware.

It comes after former  U.S. Senator and Vice President Joe Biden’s stunning string of victories  in Super Tuesday primaries around the country.

After struggling with a  campaign that lacked energy, money,  and focus, Biden came to life in South Carolina, a state where he always had strong support among  African American voters.

Biden easily lapped the field in the southern state and went on to rack up victory after victory south of the Mason Dixon line Tuesday night. He even eked out a win in delegate-rich Texas.

The photo of the night came when Jill Biden and a campaign aide stopped an anti-dairy activist who rushed the stage. Jill,  a Flyers fan who has been fending off hecklers, noted earlier that she is a “good Philly girl” capable of taking care of business.

Late this morning billionaire Michael Bloomberg dropped out of the race, joining other moderate Democrats who saw no path to the nomination after South Carolina.

While U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders picked up his home state of Vermont, as well as Colorado and heavily populated California,  Biden’s rickety campaign machine triumphed in Elizabeth Warren’s home state of Massachusetts as well as neighboring Maine.

Had the primary been held a few days later, it is possible that Biden would have picked up the left-leaning Golden State.

Clearly, the center of the Democratic party wants a return to something approaching normalcy minus Medicare for All and income redistribution that are part of the Sanders agenda.

Biden faces a tough road ahead. As one pundit noted  last night, the race is in the fourth inning with a lot of baseball to be played.

The Sanders campaign remains well-funded, with fiercely loyal supporters who like his “angry grandpa” approach.

Should Biden somehow zig and zag his way through this marathon, he will face the difficult task of uniting a party that did not fully heal from Hillary Clinton winning out over Sanders.

For now, even Biden’s many critics in Delaware and elsewhere had to marvel at this sudden turn of events.
