Fisker’s never say die electric vehicle effort

Henrik Fisker is back.

The charming Dane – who left Delaware $20 million or so lighter in the wallet when the feds pulled the plug on his hybrid car venture – has been busy on the marketing front.

His latest pitch – a sun-drenched California theme for an all-electric SUV known as the Fisker Ocean.

While many details remain unclear, Fisker did come up with a prototype.

Rather than stretching boundaries with his gift for automotive design, Fisker decided that a California eco-friendly vibe was the way to go. After all, the state’s surf culture loved old station wagons and VW vans.

The Ocean is touted as the world’s most sustainable vehicle, with a powerful solar roof and what promises to be extensive use of recycled materials. An under $40K price is listed, along with a lease of less than $400 a month.

Fisker is now taking reservations for the vehicle, which is scheduled to go into production in 2022 and promises a battery range of 300 miles.

Fisker continues to get coverage on automotive websites, especially those focusing on electric vehicles. Here’s a recent interviewthat offers some details.

The mainstream automotive media remains skeptical.

After all, the Fisker Karma hybrid – which was penciled in for the former Boxwood Assembly Plant while being assembled in Finland – suffered from a long list of woes that ranged from fires to vehicles on a New Jersey dock being washed away by Hurricane Sandy.

A Chinese company that for a time ended up with the Boxwood plant and other Fisker assets now offers an updated version of the vehicle.

Earlier, Fisker touted an all-electric luxury car concept that hinted at a breakthrough in battery technology. That’s on the back burner.

Also announced was a driverless shuttle. After much publicity in 2018, nothing has materialized. The State of Delaware, meanwhile, is testing a shuttle of French origin.

The biggest question is how Fisker can build a $40,000 vehicle after seeing the near-death experience well-funded Tesla went through in assembling its lower-priced 3 series.

There is also the issue of rolling out a vehicle at a time when all major automakers have a host of electric vehicles available or in the works. Tesla, despite its ups and downs, is now a brand or as the kids say, “a thing.”

One thing we do know is that Fisker will not make a pitch in Delaware. Both auto plant sites have been razed. A portion of Boxwood site, which was to have been the home for Fisker’s under $40,000 hybrid car, seems destined to become an Amazon fulfillment center.
