Commonwealth Construction was the low bidder on a new Delaware Department of Transportation Canal District office building in Bear.

Commonwealth’s bid came in about 15 percent below the engineer’s estimate.  Only two companies placed bids on demolishing the existing building and constructing a new headquarters.

The building would replace a 50-year-old structure at the site,  DelDOT spokesman C.R. McLeod reported in September.

Offices were moved in January. with demolition to follow. A new building will contain less square footage but will allow for more efficient use of space than the previous complex, McLeod said.

The project will also allow for more parking at the crowded site off Route 7, between Routes 40 and 273.

The office complex has been funded, McLeod said.
