Amazon to add 150 jobs in Delaware, 150 in neighboring Md. site in response to coronavirus-related demand

Amazon will add 150 jobs in Delaware as the company deals with demand and other issues resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

An Amazon spokeswoman confirmed the 150-job figure applies to its fulfillment centers in New Castle and Middletown. A third center in Perryville, MD, a short drive from the Delaware line, will see another 150 jobs.

A blog entry from Amazon announced that the company will add 100,000 full and part-time positions across the U.S. in order to meet a surge in demand “from people relying on Amazon’s service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public.”

The post continued, “We also know many people have been economically impacted as jobs in areas like hospitality, restaurants, and travel are lost or furloughed as part of this crisis. We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back,”

Amazon is also raising wages by $2 an hour through the end of April.  Starting pay  is typically is $15 an hour.

Like other employers, Amazon is increasing cleaning and taking steps to increase “social distancing” for employees.
