Legislative Hall staffers plan to join union.


In a startling  announcement on the first day of the Legislative Session, staff members of the Delaware General Assembly announced plans to unionize.

The effort is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

According to the announcement, both Democrats and Republican staffers are plan t to become affiliated with the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, Council 81.

A release cited the lack of worker protections as one reason for the unionization effort. Staffers hope to receive recognition from General Assembly leadership.

Legislative staffers work long hours during the General Assembly session, which often concludes in the early morning hours of July 1.Positions typically have no civil service protection.
