Young city residents, ages 14 to 17, can now apply  now for the 2019-20 Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps.

The free nine-session for young Wilmington residents provides hands-on outdoor activities, career exploration, exposure to environmental issues, and mentoring. The program is being offered in partnership with the Delaware Nature Society at the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center at 501 North Madison Street.

Two semesters will be offered — one now, in the Fall of 2019, and the other in the Spring of 2020. A new group of teens are selected for each semester. Participants will complete six after-school sessions, one community service project and one field trip as well as attend a closing ceremony. Each participant will also earn a $500 stipend.

“The Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps has been offered during the summer as part of Wilmington’s Youth Career Development Program, and we are very excited to have these additional opportunities for our young people,” said Mayor Mike  Purzycki. “The WYEC enables young people to explore the outdoors and learn about the natural world as well crucial environmental issues that affect all of our lives directly. In addition to being mentored and learning about environmental career opportunities, the teen participants will be making a positive difference in the community.

The Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps Fall semester begins Thursday, October 24, and will conclude with a closing ceremony on Thursday, December 12, 2019. The remaining sessions include Thursday, October 31; Thursday, November 7; Thursday, November 14; Saturday, November 16 (Field Trip); Thursday, November 21; Saturday, November 23 (Community Project); and Thursday, December 5.
