Delaware Electric Cooperative  has launched a community solar program.

For an extra $10 a month added to the electric bill, the co-op’s residential  members can power their home with solar energy without installing their own systems.

Commercial members will be able to purchase blocks of renewable energy for $10 a piece. Commercial members can enroll by calling 855-332-9090.  Residential customers can sign up here.

Members who sign up for the  community solar program will also be sent a special lighting conservation kit and a solar-powered phone charger.

The cooperative, based in Greenwood,  serves members in areas of Kent and Sussex County. The DEC service area has seen rapid population growth.

Other areas of the state are served by Delmarva Power or municipal electric systems.

The co-op is under a state mandate to increase its share of power from renewables to 25 percent.
