A man and a woman died in a shooting Saturday afternoon at a nursing care facility near Wilmington.

Delaware State Police were dispatched to the ManorCare nursing home at 700 Foulk Road, in north Wilmington.

Troopers reported that an 82-year-old man and a 79-year-old woman were both pronounced deceased at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.  The female was a resident of ManorCare.  A handgun has been recovered from the scene.

The individuals were identified as 82-year-old Louis M. Camerota and his wife, Gail F. Camerota, 79.

Troopers reported that Louis Camerota came to the facility to visit his wife Gail Camerota who was a resident.  Louis approached his wife in a common area of the facility where he shot her once before turning the weapon on himself, resulting in both their deaths at the scene.

The building has been  declared safe at this time and troopers said there is no reason for residents of the area to be concerned for their safety. Such statements typically indicate the shooter turned the gun on his or herself.

The shooting triggered massive police and first responder presence at the nursing home in the Foulk-Shipley Road area near Wilmington, home to a number of elder care facilities. A police helicopter was reportedly hovering overhead for a time.

The Delaware Department of Transportation reported that  Foulk Road between Murphy Road and Route 202 was closed for a time due to police activity.
