Storms swept through Delaware on early Wednesday night leaving more than 5,000 customers without power.
Both Delmarva Power and Delaware Electric Cooperative reported outages.
Delaware Electric reported damage from downed trees and poles in its Kent and Sussex County service area. Delmarva’s outages were primarily in New Castle County.
9:15 pm Outage Update: storms have now knocked out power to 3700 members in Kent and Sussex counties. All available crews have been called in. We have numerous reports of utility poles and trees down. It will likely be hours before power is restored to all members.

The intense storms are part of an unstable pattern that came with the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry, which caused extensive flooding in Louisiana.
The storms briefly cooled down the area, but a blend of high heat and humidity is expected to remain through Sunday.
