Employee critically injured when Tesla crashes into Greenwood office

A woman in a Greenwood office was critically injured when a car struck the building.

The accident occurredat 11:01 a.m., when a 2018 Tesla Model 3,was initially traveling westbound on East Market Street approaching the intersection of southbound Sussex Highway, Route 13.

Troopers reported the driver of the Tesla changed lanes into the left turn lane of East Market Street, in order to turn left to US 13.

The vehicle, for undetermined reasons, accelerated rapidly, crossing the center line and eastbound lane on East Market Street before making its way to the south edge of East Market Street.

The Tesla crossed both southbound lanes of Route 13 and exited the roadway striking the Bay to the Beach sales office building. Bay to the Beach is a custom home building company.

An employee of Bay to the Beach was inside the building working at her desk when she was struck by the Tesla as it crashed through the building.

The Tesla’s driver, a 79-year-old woman from Gloucester, VA was taken to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The employee, a 31-year-old Seaford, woman was first transported to Nanticoke Memorial Hospitaland later taken to Christiana Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit.

The intersection of East Market Street and Southbound Sussex Highway was closed for approximately 4 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
