Chemours researcher awarded top honor

The Society of Chemical Industry   America Group, announced that John Sworen, technical fellow at The Chemours Company will be awarded the 2019 SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal. The honor recognizes his contributions in the research and development of non-fluorinated, renewably sourced durable water repellents for use in the consumer textile market. SCI established the Gordon E. Moore Medal to recognize early-career success in innovation, as reflected both in market impact and improvement to quality of life.

Sworen led a team that invented the Teflon EcoElite finish, the first renewably sourced, non-fluorinated fabric treatment for durable water repellency and manufactured with 60 percent renewably sourced raw materials.

Sworen is a Technical Fellow at The Chemours Company. In 2008 while at DuPont, John received the Bolton/Carothers Innovative Science Award for the development of a short chain soil protectant used in carpeting materials.

Wohlsen Construction Company announced the addition of two new construction professionals to the Delaware Valley team: Marcos Espinoza as MEP Preconstruction Manager and Leonard Petrovich as project manager/superintendent.

Espinoza  is  MEP preconstruction manager where he works with the design and construction teams to manage the MEP processes and budgeting during the preconstruction phase. Espinoza holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Business Administration from St. Joseph’s University.

Petrovich joins Wohlsen as a project manager/carpentry superintendent as part of Wohlen’s Delaware Valley expanding the self-perform group. Throughout his 37 years of experience he has worked on numerous projects throughout the region 

DSM Commercial announces new team members

DSM Commercial, a Newark area company specializing in commercial real estate, development, construction, property management, welcomed four new members to its team in the  past quarter. These new members include Madison Purvey (Marketing Intern), Griffin Conaty (Brokerage Agent), Kortney Diduch (Administrative Associate), and Fran Papili (Construction Services).

 State Board of Education appointments

Governor John Carney has appointed a former State Teacher of the Year and a rising high school senior to serve on the State Board of Education.

Lea Wainwright, Delaware’s 2014 State Teacher of the Year, and Dorcas Olatunji, a Charter School of Wilmington student, will serve on the board until July 1, 2020.

Wainwright is a French teacher at Appoquinimink School District’s Everett Meredith Middle School. She earned her undergraduate degree in French from the University of Delaware. She earned a Masters of Education in educational technology and a Doctor of Education in leadership and innovation from Wilmington University.

Olatunji has  volunteering and extracurricular experience, including involvement in the YMCA National Advocacy Program and Youth in Government (YIG), in which she served as a YIG Youth Leadership Committee member. Among other work, she helped develop a carpool app to help youth find rides to volunteering and activities. Olatunji was selected from a competitive and diverse pool of applicants representing all three counties in the state as well as traditional, vocational-technical and charter schools.

  Hernandez named sales coordinator at Courtyard by Marriot UD.

Courtney Hernandez has been named  Sales Coordinator at the Courtyard by Marriott, Newark – University of Delaware.  She is part of the  hotel sales team comprised of  Melissa Driggs, director of sales, and Keleigh Davies, sales manager.

The sales team  is involved in guest room, meeting room and social event bookings. 

Christiana Care nurse wins national honor

The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) has honored Carol Flores-Gopez, nurse manager, Cardiovascular Critical Care Complex (CVCCC), with its 2019 Circle of Excellence Award.

The award is given annually to outstanding nurses nationwide for achieving excellent outcomes in the care of acutely and critically ill patients and their families.

This month, 14 honorees will be recognized at AACN’s National Teaching Institute & Critical Care Exposition in Orlando, Florida.

Flores-Gopez joined Christiana Care in 1991. She was assistant nurse manager and patient care coordinator of the CVCCC for 14 years before being promoted to nurse manager of the unit in 2016. Her previous experience included nursing at Jamaica Hospital in Queens, N.Y., and the Philippine Heart Center for Asia.

Bayada Home Health Care announces hero of year

Bayada Home Health Care announced that it has named Dr. John Petrides, PT as its national Physical Therapist Hero of the Year. Petrides was honored for exemplifying the highest standards of care and demonstrating the company’s core values of compassion, excellence, and reliability.
